TOEFL® Test
Preparation in Canada for the TOEFL® Test
The Test of English as a Foreign LanguageTM (TOEFL®) is the best-known North American exam of English proficiency, and is required for entrance to most North American universities and colleges.
At PLI, our TOEFL Test Preparation courses are designed for students in PLI levels 5, 6, and 7 (high intermediate to advanced), who can manage the speed and accuracy necessary for a satisfactory score. The placement test that we give all students on their first day determines their level and whether they can join the TOEFL Test Preparation course or not. We recommend that students plan for a semester (12 weeks) of preparation unless they know that they are already quite advanced.
Students in the TOEFL Test Preparation program take 20 or 30 hours per week of study. One of their classes is a TOEFL Test preparation class, in which grammar, vocabulary, reading, and listening exercises are done and test-taking strategies are taught. A second class is our regular Communication Skills class at the appropriate level. A third class (for 30 hrs/week) can be chosen from among a few options, for example, Oral Production and Fluency, additional Communication Skills, Business English, etc. Click here for more information on our programs.
The TOEFL Test takes place at a TOEFL Test centre in downtown Vancouver and Toronto. All interested students must register for the test on their own. Students should pick up registration information as soon as they arrive, and can book to take the test at their convenience; the test is computerized and times are very flexible at all testing centres. Another advantage of the new computerized test is that you can see your test scores immediately on the screen.
As with all other courses, the TOEFL Test Preparation program is available at our PLI Vancouver and PLI Toronto schools upon student requests. In Toronto, we do not have a TOEFL Test Preparation class every month. When we do not offer a distinct TOEFL Test Preparation class, students can take our Grammar and Accuracy class, which covers similar material in the areas of grammar and vocabulary.

TOEIC® Test
The Test of English for International CommunicationTM (TOEIC®) is used for measuring English language proficiency for language useful in the workplace. It is designed specifically to test various abilities in English, as it is used in real-life situations in business and in the government.
The PLI Preparation program for the TOEIC Test is designed to help students improve their listening, reading comprehension, and grammar skills and test scores. Students wishing to take the TOEIC Test Preparation program, must be assessed at PLI level 3-5, as the course has been developed for intermediate level students. As with other programs, the TOEIC Test Preparation program is available at each school dependent upon student requests. Exams are held at PLI once a month.
